Background or incidental music is used to support the narrative and shape how the audience feels about what’s happening on screen. It subtly guides emotion, signaling tension, warmth, or irony and helping to convey subtext that dialogue alone might not express. It also helps control the pacing of a scene—soft, gentle music can slow a moment, while a rising cue can increase urgency—without adding new information through words. The purpose isn’t to entertain with lyrics, to replace dialogue, or to reveal character names; those tasks belong to other elements of filmmaking. For example, a tense scene might use a tense, sustained score to heighten suspense, while a tender moment might employ a quiet, melodic motif to underscore intimacy.
